National Rally 2005

Saturday dawned, well, overcast, not at all the hot weather promised by the weathermen. Nothing daunted, I packed my camping gear and other stuff into the van and set off to Old Warden, Biggleswade. It was still overcast when I arrived and when I went round to put up my tent several others were set up already.

On going back to Mike's regalia tent he told me I had just missed an Andrew Moore of Leicester who made enquiries about ENW 307 because he had some 8mm cine film featuring it on an 1800 mile holiday to France, Spain and Italy in 1965, that had been transferred to video if I was interested. I am awaiting his phone call.
There were six cars present on the Saturday,
which did eventually break-out with sunshine and give a fine afternoon and evening. After the collection closed those staying overnight retired to the camping field and enjoyed a most convivial evening, it was just like the old days! There were about 20 members and wives gathered round reminiscing, supping not homebrew but various types of proprietary ales and a box of red wine. Even our esteemed Editor and Jenny had dug out their tent and made the long trip down from 'oop north'.

The comedy cabaret for the evening was presented by the Two Johns (Dentry and Chadwick) and the air was riven by groans and occasional roars of laughter. The weather was so good we sat there until about 10.30 when everyone departed to their beds.
Sunday's early alarm at 5am was by the raucous calls of peacocks, but most were able to doze off again until the sun got too hot to stay in sleeping bags. During the morning further cars and members arrived, giving a total over the weekend of 20 cars - five Scouts, 13 Trikes, one TB10 and a RWD Light Six.
After the judging the trophies were awarded as follows:-

National Shield (concours) Simon Barringer (trike)

Perrigo Trophy (opposite) John Chadwick (Scout)

Savage Trophy (trike originality) Jonathan Lines

F.W.Hulse Trophy (Scout originality) John Chadwick

Jack Cottam Trophy (distance) Peter Cook

Four Pot Trophy (project) Jonathan Lines

Armoury Road Cup (best trailered) lan Tuck

RWD Cup Steve Folland

Simon Barringer's trike and lan Tuck's Series 6 two-seater Scout had both been purchased about a year ago and were a credit to both owners.
One car present that has not been since the mid-seventies was BKT175, for- merly belonging to Brian Grindrod. This had been purchased by Jonathan Lines on the Friday before the rally. Although it was not a flying weekend we were treated to the sight of a Lysander, Gloster Gladiator and Sea Hurricane in flight on the Saturday and on the Sunday the Spitfire gave quite an extensive flight.
Thanks to Mike and Eileen Scott-Coomber who not only organised the week- end but once again the wonderful weather as well.  The Spitfire»
