BSAs AT BROOKLANDS by Anneke Burger-v.d. Blom
From "Front Wheels" November 1993
Our 1993 Summer holiday was, to
both us and our children, a very pleasant and varied one, also thanks to
several BSA members. Our holiday
started well, when we visited the
meeting at Brooklands, the museum
and the old race-course (circuit) and
afterwards with the wonderful dinner
we enjoyed with Mr. Dick Birkhead
and his wife Audrey at their house in
Weybridge, together with many
members, several of whom we have
become acquainted with in the
meantime (over the years).
Our
children Vincent and Raymond were
driven to Dick's house in Tony
Oliver's BSA, whilst I sat in John
Chadwick's car; a wonderful
experience. The drive my husband
Jaap was allowed on the Brooklands
race-circuit, in order to make a video
recording, with Graham Skillen's and
John Chadwick's permission, was a
unique experience. We were very
much impressed by Brooklands.
At present there is a British serial on
Dutch television, called the House of
Eliott. In one the instalments there
was a scene at the Brooklands race-
circuit, with beautiful old time cars.
The next day, on our way to Land's
End, we visited the Haynes Sparkford
museum with the fantastic old time
cars, where we discovered a
wonderful water-colour painting,
representing the Brooklands race-
circuit. Then we continued our
journey to Cheddar, where we were
welcomed by Peter Tillett at his
garage. The latter invited Jaap to
drive in his BSA car. We spent one
night on the nearby private campsite.
The next morning we paid a surprise

visit to the Cheddar caves. Cheddar is
a lovely place and the cheese tastes
excellent!
In Ross-on-Wye we called on Mr.
Hilary Way, BSA member, for a cosy
tea. We visited our other friends in
Ross, as well as the local "Lost Street"
museum.
In Holyhead we took the ferry to
Ireland (Dublin). On board there
was a singer who song Irish folksongs,
accompanied by a very good band.
We spent four days in Southern
Ireland and visited castles, laid out
gardens and lovely little villages. We
returned to Dublin and from Wales
we travelled northwards. With
beautiful stops for overnight stays we
drove to Scotland. On 26th August
we reached John O'Groats, our final
destination, where, the next day, we
celebrated Raymond's thirteenth
birthday. We then went south, to
West Yorkshire, where we met Peter
Nicholls and his wife Jenny. We
drove up the hill, along a winding
path, at the end of which we arrived
at their beautiful old house, a freem
landscape and many possibilities. We
exchanged information.
The next morning we left for
Nuneaton, where we visited our
friends who used to own a BSA car.
Together we visited the Stoneleigh
Festival, where there was also a show
of old time motorbikes and cars,
Geoff Parr being present with his
beautiful BSA.
On our way back to Dover and in the
nearby village of Grays, we met Geoff High
and his wife Gladys with
their sweet dogs. Tea and dinner
were most welcome. Geoffs BSA,
the beautiful green colour was worth
looking at. After a tour with Geoff
we first visited the old harbour and
then Mr. John King at his motorshop,
BSA Trike owner and Vincent man, all very much worth visiting.
It was nice seeing him at the recent Vincent meeting in Holland.
Back to Doverfor the nightboat to Oostende.
We had covered 5,500 kilometres, butthanks to the pleasant BSA contacts
n between we had a lovely holiday, which increased our enthusiasm. Many thanks to everyone. Hope to
meet you again soon!
